Phenomenal local family-owned restaurant run by a wonderful hard-working family. They just opened their restaurant this February 2025. The owners are very welcoming and the husband has worked for three Michelin star restaurants for over 25 years. You can taste the Michelin expertise when eating their delicious food. I ordered the seafood soup and my husband ordered the cod. The food was so delicious that we came back the next day and ordered the seafood soup again and the Mexican burger. The couple sitting next to us also came back twice as well! The Cod was fresh from this morning's catch and cooked to perfection lying delicately on a bed of mashed potatoes and chimichurri sauce and cauliflower. The Mexican burger was quite a mouthful stuffed with guacamole, crushed Doritos, a hefty patty of beef, sitting in between a flavorful brioche bun and the best Icelandic french fries I've had. The seafood soup is the superstar of the menu by far. It is made up of a complex camaraderie of perfectly complementing flavors. The base is a red soup containing fresh shrimp, cod, salmon, salmon roe, and smoked buttermilk foam. They also have a decent wine and beer selection. I am drinking a Pinot Noir from Chile. Don't forget to order dessert. I suggest the notable lava cake, appropriate for the Icelandic landscape. A show of warm chocolate oozes out of a ball of deliciousness along with vanilla ice cream, blueberries and razberries. This place will be worth the stop.

This was a truly incredible dining experience. Fantastic service and beautifully decorated restaurant. The seafood soup was one of the best soups I’ve ever had. The catch of the day was cod and it was delicious. Blueberry mojito is a must have, and the lava cake dessert was fantastic. All in all, an amazing experience. HIGHLY recommend!

If you’re anywhere near the snaefelsjokull peninsula definitely go here!!! We got a Swiss mocha that was good and helped get us through the drive back to Selfoss! We also both got the fish of the day which was a delicious lightly breaded cod with a steamed cabbage and tasty sauces all around! We shared their pistachio chocolate mousse and the skyr oat fruit pudding which were both scrumptious!! We cleaned all of our plates!! Would definitely come back here again! Any distance of driving is worth it to come here! Plus Baejarfoss is right in the back of the town! Amazing restaurant and hospitality!

Excellent dinner - beautiful to all senses and the wait staff was an absolute delight! We shared a number of dishes - including the seafood soup, lamb burger and lava cake. Everything was amazing! The brown sauce on the lava cake is caramel

This place has kind and wonderful staff. Amazing food. Fish melts in your mouth with a fantastic variety of flavors and textures you would not likely imagine. Throw in the lava cake and feel the cold, hot, sweet joy imprint a delicate and most wonderful jewel of this peninsula.

Ambience: Beautifully designed restaurant with a great vibe. It is spacious with lots of light which is very inviting. The seats are very comfortable as well. Food: Fantastic. One of the best food we have tried ever. I’m not a big fan of fish but the way they made the Cod was so delicious that I couldn’t remember having such a tasty fish. The burgers were extremely juicy and tasty as well. We also had the seafood salad which was another piece of art on its own . The dessert was a master piece as well. Overall the food was extremely tasty, well presented with generous portion sizes. We later found out that the chef’s name is Beniamin and I should congratulate him for such a talent. Service: Excellent. Ms. Justyna was extreme kind and caring making sure that everything is great. She was very thoughtful and warm. Overall: I can’t recommend this restaurant enough. The food is great by a very talented chef, the service is excellent by a caring owner . It’s truly a gem in this small city.

We had the absolute best meal of our trip at Matarlist Restaurant. The baked cod was hands down the best I’ve ever had – perfectly cooked and paired with a garnish that complemented the fish beautifully. For dessert, we tried the lava cake, and it was out of this world. The homemade ice cream made it unforgettable. What made the experience even more special was chatting with the owner. She personally drives 100 km every day to pick up fresh salmon and cod – a true testament to the quality and passion behind the food here. If you’re in Iceland, don’t miss this place. Truly one of the highlights of our trip!
